Social and Networking

Even though we’re an online conference, we can still network with each other!

The organising committee is planning a range of events to allow for networking with a bit of fun thrown in.

Virtual Scavenger Hunt

A fun activity to do throughout conference week!

ESA2020 scavenger hunt items will be listed here on Monday morning. Take photos of your scavenger hunt items and post them on Twitter, Instagram (publicly viewable account) or Facebook with the hashtag #FindESAus20

One point will be awarded per item. Bonus points for witty captions! A scoreboard will be updated and shared throughout the week and winners will be announced at trivia night.

Good luck!

Diversity at ESA

Monday 30 November, 1230-1330

At ESA we are committed to equitable opportunity, promoting diversity and an environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. This event is meant to celebrate diversity, while also raising awareness of issues regarding inclusion.

This year our very own Ayesha Tulloch will lead a discussion about how to make events more inclusive for diverse participants, with a focus on results from a recent review of LGBTQIA+ inclusion in global ecology and conservation events. All are welcome to participate in the discussion.

ESA Queer Mixer

Monday 30 November, 1900-2000

Join us for the second annual ESA Queer Mixer! Grab a drink (or non-alcoholic beverage) and relax while you meet new people and chat in a safe and welcoming space.

This event will kickstart what we hope will become a Queer Ecologists Network, where people can raise issues, make friends, or just find a sense of community within the field.

International Networking Breakfast.

Tuesday 1 December, 0800-0845

This is an informal networking session to welcome our international conference attendees, help them establish connections with other conference attendees, and answer their questions about the conference. All are welcome whether you’re from inside Australia or outside! The session will run as three 15 minute small group conversation blocks. The software will automatically allocate you to a group every 15 minutes. BYO breakfast.

Online Trivia

Wednesday 2 December 2020, 1900-2030

Are you itching to flex your mental muscles? Sign up for the ESA Trivia Night and show off your knowledge of all things esoteric, with questions about butterflies, supercontinents and everything in between! Sign up as a team, or individually if you want to meet new people. Stay tuned for more information.

Some sample questions:
1. What is the next perfect number after 6?
2. In the original Wizard of Oz movie, what did they used to make the snow in the poppy field scene?
3. What does ENSO actually stand for?
4. What is the deepest lake in the world?
5. What was significant about Hesperia busiris, one of the world’s rarest butterflies?’

Chinwags

We are excited to introduce ESA Chinwags – an opportunity to meet new people, create new networks or catch up with old ones!

One of the best things about the ESA Conference are the conversations in the corridors, over lunch or in the bar. ESA2020 may be online this year but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have a chinwag!

If you’re keen for a chat, how about hosting a Chinwag? Set up a Zoom meeting and send the link, topic, and preferred time or day to tricia@kaigi.com.au and we’ll advertise it in the ESA2020 program.

What would you like to Chinwag about?

Chief Twit

Are you a twit? Want to be crowned our Chief Twit? Get tweeting our conference hashtag #ESAus20 and you might just top the crop! The individual who tweets the #ESAus20 hashtag most frequently between now and 10am Thursday 3 December will be awarded a copy of ‘Animals Make Us Human‘, edited by Leah Kaminsky and Meg Keneally.
